Hello all my Salvage Antique Junkies,

This past week we were able to do a fun makeover on my parents Lake House Master Bedroom. We wanted to surprise my mom for her Mother‘s day gift, with a Cozy Cottage retreat for her to relax in while she is at the lake. Like many of us , they have focused on most of the other rooms before doing there own room. I know I can relate to that. It seems like the master bedroom is always pushed to the end of the to do list because we tend to put others before ourselves, which was the perfect opportunity for me to be able to do something nice for my parents.

The master bedroom does not get a ton of natural light and looked like a dark cave with the color that was on it when they purchased it. So the one thing that we knew we would be doing is brightening it up with a lighter paint color. I can not stress enough how much impact painting a room makes. Even if you are on a tight budget and cant afford to do much, always always start with a fresh coat of paint. It still amazes me how powerful paint can be with each project we complete. I know how much it impacts a room and still every time I am blown away that paint changed the space that much. I started with the paint color S.W. Agreeable grey and after painting the first wall realized it was not light enough to brighten the space so we added some of it to S.W Pure White which made a really beautiful light grey color. After painting the whole room in this, it honestly already felt like a cozier place to retreat to.

The picture below is the before pic of the room. Although it doesnt look as dark in the picture as it actually was.

The next thing step was adding board and batten wall treatment and building a headboard right onto the wall. We did have an idea of what we wanted to do but we tweaked things as we went. My biggest concern was that the headboard looked like a headboard and not just board and battens on the wall. So we achieved this look by adding a detail piece of trim under the top piece, and adding a 1x4 piece of trim that sits on top of everything to add some depth to the headboard. The headboard is the main thing we we altered from original plan and honestly ending up way better by doing that. Never get to stuck on one idea that you ignore the possibility of something even better than you had originally planned.

With Board and Batten wall treatment, I always recommend painting the walls first before doing the battens, as is its a lot easier to paint without having to go in between all the battens. I caulked around each batten and all the headboard battens. Don’t skip this step, caulking gives everything a professional finished and polished look.

Close up picture of the headboard detail molding that gives it that cozy cottage feel, and progress pic of the battens hung up but not painted the same color as wall yet.

I Think every room needs to have at least a few antique pieces in it. I think the old balances the new and is what adds character to the new parts of the room. You want your space to tell your story, and be uniquely done just for you. I love a wow statement piece in a room. I search for years sometimes for that perfect piece to go in a room. It’s that piece that when you see it you know that’s it.... its the one. That’s how I felt with this sign. The first place we went to when we moved to Oxford, was the antique store. This sign was in the back corner surrounded by so much stuff you almost couldn’t see it, but I knew it was special and exactly what my dad has been looking for. I sent him picture right away and so glad he snagged this beauty. This sign is stunning with its aged patina, and we honestly had no intentions of hanging it in the bedroom, it was going to be in the living room, but just for the heck of it we held it up to see what it looked like in bedroom, and we knew that’s where it belonged. This antique sign elevated the whole room. These are the kinds of pieces I love hunting for. The pieces that take your breathe away.

We made a quick trip into town to look for a few throw pillows for the bed and I was shocked when we saw a few ticking stripe pillows, that never happenS. Whenever I normally go shopping for something I rarely find it, and not only did we find pillows they were exactly what I was wanting to add some pattern and layers for there bed. Ticking stripe to me is a cozy cottage feeling That makes you feel at home.

I loved giving this room a fresh makeover. It was such a fun way to do some thing special for my momma. She is amazing and deserves the best. She loved her new bedroom !!!!! Happy Mother’s Day!!!!!!

The room now is brighter, cozier, and even feels happier.

Have a great week my Salvage Antique Junkies!!!

Happy Mother’s Day!!!
